Good morning, boys and girls! I’m glad to see you today. How are you? (В ответ дети приветствуют учителя и отвечают на его вопросы).

Today at the lesson we are going to visit the Arctic which is the unusual place of our planet.

To my mind, you have already heard about the Arctic and known some facts about it. That’s why I would like you to answer some my questions about this severe land.

1. The Arctic is a region located in the north of the Earth. The Arctic consists of the Arctic Ocean and all or parts of different countries.

The word Arctic comes from Greek. The Arctic climate is characterized by cold winters and cool summers. Precipitation mostly comes in the form of snow. Average winter temperatures can be as low as — 40 degrees.

The Arctic has 8 nations within it. They are Canada, Russia, Greenland, the United States, Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Iceland. It is an area with 2 million people in it and over 50 languages.

2. The Arctic is an exciting place full of animals and people. There are many types of animals that have their own habitat and it isn’t all frozen. The animals vary in size and characteristics.

The arctic land is tundra. The frozen ground is covered with plants like moss and lichen, which caribou and muskox feed on.

Trees cannot grow in the Arctic, but in the warmest parts mosses and lichens can form thick layers. In the coldest parts of the Arctic, much of the ground is bare.

3. The people of the Arctic depend on the caribou and muskox for most of their food and clothing. Some villages in Greenland and arctic Canada depend on narwhal and their entire existence.

A wide range of marine mammals and fish live in the severe conditions of the Arctic Ocean. Whales, dolphins (narwhal), seals all make their home in the North Pole region which is covered with ice most of the year.

The great polar bear depends on these marine mammals and fish for his survival.

Учащимся предлагается в группах ответить на вопросы анкеты, цель которой – выяснить знания детей об Арктике.

Дети работают в группах, отрабатывая чтение новых слов.

Перед чтением текстов об Арктике даётся задание – ознакомиться с утверждениями об этом регионе (правда-неправда), быть готовыми неверные утверждения исправить.

Задание можно выполнить полностью лишь прослушав все тексты, предложенные группам.

В ходе чтения происходит демонстрация иллюстраций (слайдов) по теме.

Производится взаимопроверка.

По итогам проверки команды оценивают работу друг друга.

Детям предлагается заполнить таблицу, используя которую они смогут рассказать об Арктике, можно выдать тексты.

Дети рассказывают об Арктике, используя свои записи.

Учащиеся работают индивидуально.

Подводятся итоги работы групп.
