Teacher. Hello, boys and girls! I’m very glad to see you. I’ll be your English teacher today. My name is Rezeda Gasymovna. Today we are going to speak about behavior (поведение) at school, about discipline and punishments (наказание) in British schools. I hope you will be active, sociable and smart. So, let’s start.

    1. Warming up.

Teacher. What does school mean to you? Make up your statements beginning with the words “A school is a place where…”

– We become cleverer;
– We take part in different school activities;
– We have a lot of friends;
– We study interesting subjects;
– We learn new things;

We make new friends.

III. Этап подготовки учащихся к активному усвоению знаний.

Teacher. But school is not always good. Do you agree? Look at these phrases on the board and guess what they are about.

Playing truant (not coming to school without permission from parents)
Smoking, swearing, hitting, running, stealing
Not doing homework
Cheating in exams (copying from secret notes or another pupil)
Calling a teacher or another pupil bad names
Not listening in lessons
Wearing unsuitable clothes for school

Making noise during lessons

Smoking in the school building

Running in the corridors

Teacher. What are they about? (Pupils. Bad behavior)

What is bad behaviour? We are going to speak about British schools today.

The following is a list of serious and not-so-serious types of bad behaviour seen by a teacher in a London secondary school. (sheets of paper)

    • Chewing gum or eating sweets in class

    • Playing truant (not coming to school/not telling parents)

    • Smoking in the school building (in the toilets?)

    • Swearing (using bad language)

    • Not doing homework

    • Cheating in exams or lessons (copying from secret notes or another pupil)

    • Shouting and making noise during lessons

    • Running in the corridors

    • Writing on walls, desks

    • Stealing from other pupils pockets or bags

    • Calling bad names

    • Hitting other pupils or teachers

    • Not listening in lessons

    • Wearing unsuitable clothes for school

    • Leaving the classroom without permission

Teacher. How would you classify them?

Very serious / serious / not bad behavior

      1. Этап усвоения новых знаний

Teacher. As you can see in London schools there are many naughty pupils, too. That’s why British schools have to discipline pupils who behave badly in various ways. There are different punishments there.

Let’s read the texts (p.82 ex.85) and match them with the Russian equivalents for the names of punishment in British schools.

Punishments in UK schools

Here are some of the ways that UK school children can be punished.
• Exclusion: a pupil is excluded from the school and cannot come back. The pupil has to find a new school or a different method of education (home tutor, special centre for difficult pupils).
• Suspension: when a pupil is suspended they cannot enter the building or attend lessons until the school has a meeting about their case. Suspension can last from 1 to 45 days in a school term. The school usually gives work to do at home with a tutor (special teacher).
• Detention: a pupil is detained. This means he or she is asked to stay at school at the end of the school day. The pupil must work for 30 minutes or an hour more before they are allowed to leave the school.
• Lines: a pupil has to write a sentence many times (100 times) on a sheet of paper: An example sentence: I must not shout in class. This punishment is sometimes given during detention too.

Report. If you are “on report”, you have a card which you give to the teacher at the end of every lesson. Each teacher reports if you have behaved well or badly.

      1. Этап закрепления новых знаний.

a) Working on vocabulary.

Teacher. Repeat after me.

punishment

Exclusion

to misbehave

to obey the rules

to break the rule

b) Teacher. Match the sentences and the names of punishment in British schools.

— A pupil cannot come back to school.

  • A pupil cannot enter the building or attend lessons until the school has a meeting about their case.

  • He or she is asked to stay at school at the end of the school day.

  • A pupil has to write a sentence many times (100 times) on a sheet of paper.

  • A pupil has a card where the teacher writes how you behaved.

c) Teacher. We’ll discuss only detention today: What do you think about it? Some pupils from another school give their opinion on detention. Listen and say if it is a useful punishment? Do you agree with them?

d)Teacher. Have you ever behaved badly in school? Did you have detention? Work in pairs for this activity.

e)Teacher. To deal with pupils who misbehave every school has its own basic rules. “Code of Conduct”

      1. Рефлексия.

Песня “The school rule song”

Teacher. Look at the picture and tell me what rule he broke?

      1. Этап информации учащихся о домашнем задании и инструктаж по его выполнению.

Teacher. Your hometask will be to write 8-10 rules for pupils in your school. For example,

1. Everyone must walk in the school corridors

2. Pupils are not allowed to leave the school during lessons without a written letter from a parent.

3. Get to school on time.

You were very active and spoke good English. You’ll get very good marks. Thank you. Good buy.
